Buying a car in NSW with a foreign license.

I'm so relieved.
For the past few days, I was trying to get information on how to buy a car. Specifically in terms of getting a new car in NSW (the law is different with the RTA in each state. Silly, huh?)
But anyways, it turned out that one of my church mates, Sam, who is also Malaysian and who also drives a Honda provided me the information tonight on how to go about it.
She bought her Honda Jazz (4 years ago, mind you) on a Malaysian license. She has a full driving license from Malaysia. Then she had to get a code from RTA for the transaction which she gave to the car dealer.
It took the whole transaction about one month to go through, with the waiting time and all. When she received the car, she had to drive on her Learners, so she needed someone with a full Australian license to sit beside her.
Sam said she took about three lessons with the instructor before she sat for the exam, just to get familiarised with the roads... and then she could convert automatically to a full license.
What a relief!
